How soon may I log on after registering for a class?

After we receive notice that you’ve registered for a class, we will send you an email to let you know that we have received your registration and are in the process of setting up your account so you can access our course server. We strive to complete registrations within 48 hours (two business days), but this may take longer if a large number of students are enrolled in the session. After your account has been set up, we send you an email to let you know what your login and password are and the URL for WordWorx’s course server. In addition to this information, you’ll receive a file that welcomes you to the class and gives you some tips to help you get started.

When do classes begin?

New sessions start the second Monday of each month.

How long do class sessions last?

Unless otherwise stated in the course description, class sessions last 10 weeks.

What is included in each course?

Most courses have 12 lessons with two lessons being released each week (on Mondays and Thursdays).  Each lesson has a quiz, assignments, and other elements, plus there is a midterm exam and a final exam. The lessons, discussion areas, and class resources are available to students for 10 weeks.

NOTE: FrameMaker classes are composed of 14 lessons with one lesson being released each Monday.

What is included in the lessons?

Each lesson is composed of the following:

  • Lesson content
  • Printable lesson (PDF)
  • Lesson assignments
  • Lesson quiz
  • Links to additional information or related sites
  • Lesson forum

Will my access to the course be limited to certain hours and days?

After you’ve registered and logged in to the course, you may access it from any computer 24 hours per day, seven days per week for the duration of the course session.

What happens if I can’t complete the course on time?

Depending on your situation, we may be able to extend the time for you to complete the course or, if you encounter circumstances within the first three lesson releases that will make it difficult for you to work on course material, we may allow you to enroll in another session at a later date.

May I speak directly with the instructor?

Yes.  If you wish to speak to an instructor in person rather than through an email, please send an email to janet.underwood@runbox.com and the appropriate telephone number will be sent to you. If you are enrolled and class is in session, you may also be able to set up a chat session with your instructor.

Are there any writing assignments?

The Writing Great Technical Documents and FrameMaker courses have writing assignments that are evaluated by the instructor.

Is it okay if I use work‐related writing for my assignments?

Certainly, so long as your supervisor approves this use. Gaining permission to use work-related writing for assignments is the responsibility of students. Instructors will be happy to sign a confidentiality or non-disclosure agreement if requested. All submitted documents, work-related or not, are considered to be confidential.

What kinds of comments can I expect in the evaluations of my documents?

Documents submitted for assignments are line edited, (meaning that each line is meticulously reviewed and edited for grammar, punctuation, spelling, clarity, and flow). We point out your strengths as well as your weaknesses and things you may be able to do to make your writing more effective.

What happens if I decide I don’t want to take the class. Can I get a refund?

 We would hate to see you go, but we understand that sometimes, life happens! Requests to drop a class must be made in an email to janet.underwood@runbox.com with the subject line “Class drop.” Our refund structure works like this:

    • If you decide to drop the class after Lesson 1 has been released but prior to Lesson 2 being released, you will receive a full refund of the enrollment fee minus $50 for processing your enrollment.
    • If you decide to drop the class after Lesson 2 has been released but prior to Lesson 3 being released, you will receive a refund of 75 percent of the enrollment fee minus $50 for processing your enrollment.
    • If you decide to drop the class after Lesson 3 has been released but prior to Lesson 4 being released, you will receive a refund of 50 percent of the enrollment fee minus $50 for processing your enrollment.
    • No refunds are given for drops made after Lesson 4 has been released.
      NOTE: If you must drop the course for personal reasons, such as circumstances that prevent you from completing the course, please let us know. Perhaps we can enroll you in a later session at no additional cost

How to do the writing assignments work?

You may be asked to do one of the following in the writing assignments:

    • Analyze a provided document and answer questions about it
    • Revise and perhaps rewrite a provided document
    • Write a new document on an assignment subject or a subject of your choice

What format do you require the documents to be in?

Documents should be submitted as Microsoft Word, Adobe FrameMaker (saved as .mif), or Adobe PDF attachments to emails. Do not embed the document in the body of an email.

How is my grade determined?

Grades are determined by scores received for assignments, quizzes, the midterm exam, and the final exam.

Will I receive a certificate for taking this course?

Yes. If you receive high enough scores on the assignments, quizzes, midterm exam, and final exam to pass the course, you will be awarded a certificate indicating your successful completion of the course.

How soon after I submit a document for review should I expect a response?

Typically, we respond within 48 hours to let you know that we’ve received your document and give you an estimate of when we will return your review to you. Sometimes we are able to return your review to you within 48 hours. If you do not hear from us within 48 hours after submission, please submit your document again.
